Meet the Staff
Phil Young, Founder
In 1993 Phil Young, president of Universal Imaging, founded the company as a means of providing cost effective and convenient medical diagnostic services to communities throughout Michigan. Universal owns and operates several diagnostic centers as well and also delivers mobile MR, CT, Ultrasound, and SPECT Nuclear Imaging services to hospitals and physicians’ offices throughout Michigan. Under Phil’s guidance, Universal Imaging has grown into one of the largest independent outpatient diagnostic operations in the state of Michigan.

Prior to establishing Universal, in 1987 Phil started his first company: MPX. MPX is a supplier of spare parts, x-ray tubes for medical imaging equipment. In addition MPX sells medical imaging equipment and also leases mobile medical scanners. MPX is still in operation today but most of its business activity is in the area of leasing mobile medical scanners nationally. |
Phil Young started in the medical business in 1981 working for Data Scan, Inc. Data Scan sold and serviced medical equipment throughout the US. While working as sales manager for Data Scan, Phil used the opportunity to learn every aspect of the independent imaging business.
Susan Gustine, Chief Operations Officer
Susan has been in the imaging field for over 25 years, working for Data Scan, R Squared Scan Systems, and MPX, Inc., prior to coming to Universal Imaging. She has had the pleasure of watching Universal Imaging grow from a company with one filing cabinet and one employee, to the multi-site, multi-modality entity that it is today.

|
She has an extensive background in all aspects of the industry, including financial management, contracts administration, personnel supervision, and asset acquisition and deployment. |
When Susan isn’t at her desk, you can find her working in her garden or plotting her next escape to Mackinac Island.
Cynthia Kennedy, Nuclear Modality Leader
Cynthia graduated from the Toronto Institute of Medical Technology in 1980. She has worked in nuclear medicine for 27 years. Most of her career has been spent in a hospital setting, both part time and full time, as a Staff Technologist, Chief Technologist, and Clinical Coordinator for Toronto students training in local hospitals. She has worked for Universal Imaging for five years, and has been in charge of the Nuclear Medicine Department for 1 year. She has been married for 26 years to Dan, and has three children: Michael, 22; Kaitlin, 19; and Laura, 18.
Anganeta Bradley, Lead Paramedic
Angie has worked in the health field for 23 years in various positions. In most of her assignments, she has had hands-on contact with patients and their families. She received her paramedic license in 1991. She has worked as a paramedic in hospitals, on ambulances, and now at Universal Imaging. She enjoys working in the healthcare field because she gets a sense of comfort and joy in helping people through what could be a very fearful or unsure time in their lives or the life of a loved one. When not working, Angie likes spending time with her dog, family, and friends, playing outdoors, and reading.
Patricia (Trish) Kuhn, Director of Billing and Collections
Trish’s entire career has been in the health care arena. She started in 1972 with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, which at that time was actually two different companies. She worked there for six years, and when she left she was supervising a unit that processed hospital claims for payment. She then went to work for the next 15 years for a company that primarily delivered health care services for the worker’s compensation program. While there, she held a multitude of positions, from health care manager of two clinics, to marketing representative, to project coordinator for building a clinic from the ground up. To this day, that project remains one the proudest highlights of her career. Trish then moved on to Selectcare, a large HMO provider. She directed one of their health centers in Warren, Michigan, which employed a staff of 75. The center provided services for Adult Medicine, Pediatrics, OB/Gyn, Ophthalmology, and Surgical Services. When Selectcare went out of business, Trish went to work managing a large allergy practice in Birmingham, Michigan. This was her first exposure to billing from the provider side and led to her current position at Universal Imaging, where she has been for 6 years.
The multitude of changes in technology, guidelines from the various insurance carriers, and the company itself, keep her and her department challenged.
Mary McPherson, Director of Clinics
Mary McPherson has been working in the health care field for over 15 years. She started at Holy Cross Hospital in the Infectious Disease Ward. She worked there for a year and then moved to the University of Utah Hospital in the MICU/CCU. She worked in ICU for 10 years where she was a part of the Management Council and trained new Health Unit Coordinators for all the Intensive Care departments.
She moved to Michigan in the summer of 2002. She started with Universal Imaging that August. In the five years she has been with Universal Imaging, she has seen Universal Imaging grow into a company that she is proud to be a part of. With so many changes over the last few years in Radiology, her job with Universal is both very rewarding and challenging as things change.
Mary has been married for 5 years to a wonderful man named Neal. She has 2 sons; Tyler 16 and Ryan 14. They keep her very active with school and sports. She enjoys traveling and attending Detroit Tiger baseball games.
